the rain makes me productive

books in fall

finally, the rain, dark clouds, and strong, cold winds are here in the bay area. I think it’s because this weather is so infrequent here that when it does arrive, I get this burst of energy and confidence to do and achieve more.

last fall I read three books and wrote about 10 pages of my fantasy poem. this fall, I want to give myself a goal of four books and 15 pages. small and steady wins the race.

book goals

2x short book (200pgs or less)

1x regular length (250pgs or more)

1x long ash book (400pgs or more)

book choices

I’ve compiled some books that are high on my list to accomplish my fall reading goals.

the mimicking of known successes, malka older

beowulf

the first being because it is mystery-sci-fi-lesbian romance; the second being because it’s a classic epic poem that has given me inspiration in the past.

among the burning flowers, samantha shannon

in the mouth of madness, sutter cane

1. it is the shortest book in shannon’s roots of chaos series–a series I’ve been pushing myself to get into

2. this movie is one of my all time favorite movies and now there is a novelization of it: automatic read for me

it, stephen king

jonathan strange & mr norrell, susanna clark

these two, or whichever other gargantuan book I choose to read, will be the book of fall. I know myself. I know it will take about three months to read a book of these lengths and I want to enjoy whichever one I choose. but these two are high on my list because both stories, while incredibly different, are perfect for this season of gloom and rain.

I’m the type of reader that has to read multiple books at the same time. it’s a bit like watching many different shows. no one wants to watch just one show for a month or months straight. the diversity helps with my attention and if one book becomes slow then I have another book to motivate my reading.

so, after I publish this, I will begin the following weekend reading schedule:

10/03: three chapters of it

10/04: read beowulf (and take notes)

10/05: begin in the mouth of madness (after watching the movie for the thousandth time)

on monday, I will clean up and publish my beowulf notes for anyone out there who is also writing or planning on writing a fantasy epic.

until then, thanks for stopping by and let me know what books you plan on reading this fall or if you have any opinions on the books I plan on reading this fall.
