reading is hard

for the 2026 mind

I’m not talking about the actual ability to read. I’m more so talking about the mental strength to read. as in sitting down somewhere and opening a book without immediately losing focus by going on my phone.

I blame those covid years. but also I’m just not trying that hard. it’s still the beginning of may to make some resolutions for the rest of this month.

this is what I have so far:

  1. iphone in the other room
  2. tv on low volume (I can’t read in complete silence. it’s more distracting than anything.)
  3. find a dedicated time to read
  4. give myself a goal of x amount of pages per reading session

I think it’s a fine list and totally manageable. about ten years ago, right after college, I used to read 1-2 books a month. now it’s 1-2 books a year.

I miss being obsessed with a book I’m reading. here’s to hoping may will bring that obsession back.
